Wanted: an Assistant Director and a Technician/Stage Manager

Arabic-Speaking Assistant Director

We are looking for an Arabic-speaking Assistant Director for Station House Opera’s latest digital performance project, At Home in Gaza and London. We will be running a 4 week R&D workshop and rehearsal period before culminating in 2 work-in-progress performances at Toynbee Studios, London. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary collaborative team who have been developing techniques for bringing the two cities and its artists and audiences together by using simple technologies in innovative ways. It is a flexible role that includes translating, assisting with documentation and scheduling, communicating and liaising between the teams, and taking part in the creative process (which may include performing).

The contract is full-time for 4 weeks beginning October 14th (Equity pay).

Essentials:

  • Fluency in Arabic and English
  • Ability to translate live from Levantine (Palestinian) Arabic during rehearsals
  • Demonstrate a creative interest and genuine commitment to the project
  • Be highly organised and collaborative
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Relevant experience in the arts
  • Willingness and openness to take part in the work and perform (even if you are not a professional performer)

Desirable:

  • Arabic typing skills

Technician/Stage Manager

We are looking for a Technician with experience in Stage Managing for Station House Opera's latest digital performance project, At Home in Gaza and London. We will be running a 4 week R&D workshop and rehearsal period before culminating in 2 work-in-progress performances at Toynbee Studios, London. The contract runs for 5 weeks beginning on October 10th (Equity pay).

This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative team who have been developing techniques for bringing the two cities and its artists and audiences together by using simple technologies in innovative ways. Main duties include leading on all technical aspects of setting-up a live connection with our team in Gaza, troubleshooting, and programming sound and lighting. You will also act as Stage Manager during rehearsals and performances.

Essentials:

  • Good computer knowledge: IP configuration, installing drivers, comfortable tweaking code
  • Mac user
  • An understanding of Isadora
  • Basic projection and camera knowledge (aspect ratios, white balancing, and recording formats)
  • Basic microphone techniques (use of radio and boom mics, understanding of pickup patterns and placement)
  • Troubleshooting and resourcefulness
  • Excellent communication skills and patience

A working knowledge of Arabic is desirable but not necessary.
